Dance for Health Project – it’s never
too late to start dancing!
NEW Dance class
The Point is able to offer a programme of
creative dance sessions for older people that will take place at
Age Concern, Eastleigh. The course is 10 weeks long starting this
October 2010. The group will meet for a 45 minute dance class each
week with the chance to sit and have a cup of tea afterwards. The
classes are creative and fun, and focus on keeping you fit and
mobile.
The sessions are designed for the participant
to do as much or as little as you are capable of and encourage you
to make this choice based on your knowledge of your own ability and
therefore be in control of your own well being. It was also an
opportunity for you to experience and understand how dance can be a
fun form of exercise which engages both the body and mind.
Previous participants have said:
“It made me less tense and was good
for my arthritic joints. I enjoyed the sessions and am looking
forward to it starting again”
“It was nice to meet local people I didn’t
know who were interested in the same things as me”
Participants reported that this activity has
got them involved with other activities at Age Concern. Dance was
successful as it was not as intensive as things like yoga and there
was more chance to interact with others. This project is funded by
SPAA Chances 4 Change.
Previous Dance Project
Dance Artist, Leonie Campbell lead 6 weeks of
45 minute sessions at Rodbard House Day Centre for a group of 12
people with Dementia and associated disabilities. This project was
funded by Bursledon, Hamble and Hound Local Area Committee.
The sessions had an over whelming response
from the day centre users all commenting on how great the sessions
made them feel:
Leonie’s dance sessions “make me feel like
a person again”
“It’s been really good to do something
different”
“Puzzles were getting boring so I’m glad
Leonie taught us some dance”
“There are no excuses for not joining in
because Leonie makes it easy for us all”
“It has been a really good experience, and one that everyone
has enjoyed”
