Dance Intern Blog
Diary of a Dance Intern...
Hi, my name is Jilly Hurden and I am the Dance Administrator
here at The Point, Eastleigh. As the dance intern, my role is to
oversee the dance classes programme, run the Point Youth Dance
Company and assist the Dance Programme Manager and the Community
Dance Manager in all the various community and professional
projects going on at the venue and in the wider community.
As an intern the opportunities I am exposed to are
endless so check out my post to get a sneak peek at the life
of a dance intern and the doors it opens for a young dance graduate
edging her way into the wide world of dance...
Enjoy!
... A visit from the opportunities fairy...
Since joining The Point's team back in October I have been
exposed to masses of learning opportunites - youth dance
conferences, dance teaching seminars, professional companies and
their work, running youth and community platforms, delivering
gifted and talented young dancers schemes, networking
opportunities with organisations, venues, groups and education
bods, and, biggest of all, helping to coordinate, market
and deliver a two week dance festival (which is coming up from
11th - 25th June for those intersted in coming...*plug*!) - and
that list just names a few! Now that all sounds very exciting I
think you'll agree ... and it is, every single one of the
opportunities on that list, and the many more that aren't
there, have been some of the most valuable steps of my
career so far, whether big or small they are all helping me to grow
as a professional.
But, in light of this list and after some very careful
delibration, I can now reveal the events currently sharing the
number 1 spot on the chart of 'Most Favourite Point
Moments'... and the winners are....
- Meeting the brilliant and inspiring Charlotte Vincent of
Vincent Dance Theatre!
Last week I had the amazing chance to join a planning meeting
with Charlotte and The Point dance team to discuss her resindency
here this summer and the plans behind VDT's 2012/2013! It was
fascinating to watch Charlotte articulate her thoughts and even
plan as she spoke. I got to listen to her give the summer
residency shape.
- Meeting the fabulous and creative Shobana Jayasingh and her
team!
On Tuesday, Shobana and her enthusiastic team of creative minds
and dancers arrived at The Point to present the plans of Shobana's
25th Anniversay celebrations happening over 2012/2013! The
presentation included listening to Shobana talk openly about her
thoughts, ideas and choreography as well as watching extracts of
her works from way back when to bang up to date. I got to see the
intricate details of the performance and the creation process all
in one go.
In both encounters, with Charlotte and Shobana, it was so
refreshing to see things happen, either as a thought
or as a performance. It was so much more exciting than just
having it explained in a tiny piece of text on a flyer or a
website.
From the view point of my desk as The Point dance intern I can't
wait to see both Charlotte and Shobana's projects grow
and progress! It's been an eye opening experience to hear and see
the ideas and plans from the very beginning and learn the
thought processes and practical planning behind these national
projects and exciting new moves for each company!
It's going to take a while to knock these two off the top spots
on the award charts I think!
