Borough buzzing as Unwrapped brings thrills and spills to Eastleigh and Hedge End

The borough was absolutely buzzing at the weekend as crowds gathered in Eastleigh town centre and in Hedge End for the Unwrapped Festival 2022.

The event was organised by The Point and The Berry Theatre and supported by Eastleigh Borough Council, Arts Council England and Hedge End Town Council.

Thousands of people congregated in Leigh Road Recreation Ground on Saturday and Greta Park on Sunday to enjoy the family-friendly atmosphere and free performances from some of the country’s best outdoor companies.

Headliners Farm Yard Circus enthralled audiences with their thrilling acrobatic routine and there were laughs galore from Calf2Cow’s The Wave, LAS Theatre’s The Rascally Diner and Cat and Mouse Theatre’s walkabout Blockbuster Factory, with many families staying to watch repeat performances. Levantes Dance Theatre performed their High Tea show in the middle of the Greta Park basketball court watched by those still shooting hoops and the skaters on the nearby ramp.

The venues’ Creative Learning team ensured there was plenty of activity planned for younger visitors too with a chillout zone and badge-making proving especially popular. Local food vendors saw long queues for their treats and there were plenty of community stalls to browse including a kilo sale in aid of the charity Cry UK.

The Point’s focus now turns to its Summer Social programme of live music, outdoor yoga, wellbeing workshops, free after-school club and much more.

The Point Eastleigh and The Berry Theatre are owned and operated by Eastleigh Borough Council.

Charlotte Hall, Creative Director at The Point Eastleigh, said: “It was amazing to see thousands of people enjoying Unwrapped this year! The atmosphere was incredible and the acts really wowed people of all ages. Taking the event to Hedge End for a second year drew an even bigger crowd and the whole festival was a huge celebration of creativity and togetherness.”

Councillor Tonia Craig, the Council’s Cabinet Member for Health and Wellbeing, said: “It was fantastic to see so many families out enjoying the sunshine and the brilliant performances at the Unwrapped festival over the weekend. The team at the Point worked hard to pull together this incredibly well thought out weekend of free activities for people across the Borough to experience. It will be great to see what other treats the team have in store for residents and visitors with their summer programme of events.”
