Families flock to Eastleigh and Hedge End for the return of Unwrapped

THOUSANDS of families soaked up the sunshine and the pleasure of shared live arts experience at the weekend as free outdoor festival Eastleigh Unwrapped returned.

This year’s event, organised by The Point Eastleigh and supported by Eastleigh Borough Council and Arts Council England, brought a fun weekend schedule of high quality live performance to Leigh Road on Saturday and, for the first time, to Greta Park in Hedge End on Sunday.

Audiences flocked to the two parks to enjoy performances from The Puppet Van with The Lost Colour, Pif-Paf’s Seed, Dizzy O’Dare’s Giant Balloon Show and to interact with walkabout artists The Merry Maker, Vamos’s Crimpolene Crusaders and Folk Dance Remixed’s Ceilidh.

Fun free activities on offer included woodcraft, face painting, a football challenge and teacup hats, and a family chill-out space provided respite between all of the action!

Eastleigh Unwrapped marked the end of the successful 2021 Summer Social programme at The Point, which also included lots of live local music at the Bandstand, yoga, family picnics, pop-up events and the Summer Social Music & Pop-Up Bar on the Garden Stage.

The Point Eastleigh is owned and operated by Eastleigh Borough Council.

Charlotte Hall, Creative Director at The Point Eastleigh, said: “So much fun was had at Unwrapped Festival over the weekend in both Eastleigh and, for the first time, in Hedge End. It was such a joy to see people of all ages involved, from dancing toddlers all the way up to one attendee who was 100, all lapping up all of the shows and activities on offer.”

Councillor Tonia Craig, the Council’s Cabinet Member for Health and Wellbeing, said: “It was great to see so many people enjoying Unwrapped this year, especially after such a challenging period when opportunities to come together safely to see quality entertainment have been very thin on the ground. It was an inspired idea by the talented team at The Point to bring this popular event to two town centres in the Borough - and it was as well received in Hedge End as it was in Eastleigh.”
