During the February half term our resident youth dance company Hampshire Youth Dance Company (HYDC) were lucky enough to work with nationally acclaimed choreographer Botis Seva.
For five days the company worked hard in our Creation Space, working on choreographic tasks and creative ideas with Botis himself and other members of the professional company Far From the Norm.
HYDC were due to premiere the work in April as a curtain-raiser to Botis Seva's BLKDOG. Sadly this has been postponed due to Covid19. However, this hasn’t stopped the young dancers from continuing to dance together.
As part of our new Connection Point programme, each week the company are meeting online to continue with class led by rehearsal director Tory East. Tory has also set them dance challenges across the week to continue to engage in company life as much as they can. Alongside this Seva's powerhouse company Far From the Norm have developed some bespoke online dance training for the company members to keep them connected and learning new and exciting ways to move in their living rooms!
We have also sadly had to cancel the Company's spring tour this year, but are delighted to announce that Botis Seva is kindly allowing the Company to keep the work in their repertoire so that they can take it on tour in 2021.
Artist Development Producer, Vicki Hargreaves said “The sense of community is now at its strongest, HYDC members are missing their regular training sessions greatly but with the support of fantastic, creative artists we are able to continue to share the love of dance virtually. The dancers can keep up their training until the world is ready to come back into a dance studio and I for one cannot wait to see the premiere of this new work!”
"Our commission week with Botis, was really inspiring. His style is really unique and challenging".
- HYDC Dancer Megan
We are so grateful to have had the opportunity to be able to work with Botis and Jordan, we really appreciated that Botis took the time to be here (at The Point, Eastleigh) personally for the creation week so we could gain first hand experience of his style and creative process. Being able to see how one of the leading choreographers in the UK is fusing together both contemporary and street dance opened my eyes to new possibilities and inspired me to combine to the two worlds of dance I’m involved in. - HYDC Dancer, Rory
