The Point Christmas Spectacular Review

This Christmas, the Point Youth Theatre put on a Christmas Showcase – a compilation of different Roald Dahl books. Each age group treated us to a bitesize snippet of some of Roald Dahl's best known children’s books!

To kick off, we were taken on a whistle stop tour of Willy Wonka’s Chocolate Factory by the fabulous years 4 to 5 group. The colourful costumes, music and lighting were really effective and added to the really strong individual and group performances. It was a very energetic and fun performance.

Next came the 6 to 7 year age group who performed the whole of Matilda in just 20 minutes. While all the cast wore school uniform, each character had a specific accessory or item of clothing (bow, scarf, cane) which allowed the characters to be swapped between the cast members. This added variety and excitement to the performance. The acting was very, very strong, although the highlight was the very scary Miss Trunchbull who had us cowering in our seats.

After the interval came a scary version of the witches. The lighting, music, costumes and smoke affects evoked a real and sense of fear. Altogether this was a very well thought out and convincing performance.

Lastly came some light relief when we were immersed into the YR 10/11  performance of James and the Giant Peach. The characterisation of the different insects was really good and the costumes were cleverly designed to look like they could be tourists as well as the insects.

All in all, this was a very enjoyable, fun and entertaining performance which allowed each and every individual to shine.
