The Point and its sister venue The Berry Theatre are seeking enthusiastic young people aged 8-9 years old to join their popular Youth Theatre companies this autumn.
Both Youth Theatres are open to everyone aged 8-21 years old, giving every locally-based young person the opportunity to take part in safe and empowering theatre regardless of age, background or ability. The companies are currently welcoming applications for its 8-9 years groups, ideal for families living in Hedge End (The Berry Theatre) and Eastleigh (The Point).
As a Youth Theatre member, participants receive a number of invaluable opportunities including collaborating with professional visiting companies; acting in and helping to devise theatre productions; meet and make likeminded friends; and learn career-enhancing skills in technical aspects of theatre, as well as sound and costume design. Each year Youth Theatre members are invited to perform in summer and Christmas shows, presented in The Point and The Berry Theatre’s beautiful auditoriums.
The Youth Theatre’s main focus is to provide young people with key performance and industry skills to boost their confidence in a positive arts-based environment. Previous members have since gone on to train at prestigious theatre schools including Italia Conti and take on freelance roles in sound and costume. Senior Youth Theatre members are also given the opportunity to apply for a gap year placement in the Drama Development team, and learn more about the busy workings of an arts office.
Many of the Youth Theatre’s senior members have been part of the company for ten years, testament to the value of the work they do. Hannah Bradbeer, who is now a professional Performance Designer, said:
"Without the support, encouragement, community ethos and unbelievable opportunities that the Point Youth Theatre provided me I would not have achieved my dream career in Performance Design. The Point Youth Theatre gave me the tools and skills that I initially needed to springboard myself into the start of my profession. By working with professionals and being able to creatively work in a safe and supportive environment, I was inspired to expand myself and my talents beyond what I thought could be possible. They are an outstanding company to whom I will be forever grateful for."
Praised for enhancing young people’s confidence and communication skills, as well as providing training in all aspects of theatre, the Youth Theatre has engaged 195 young people aged 8-21 years old in bespoke workshops and productions in the past year. Since 2017, the Youth Theatres have performed original productions to more than 2000 paying audience members, and theatre company Street to the Point have performed at six outdoor arts festivals.
